Although the building does not have a lightning protection system, we want to erect a mobile communications station on top of it. Will I have to build a lightning protection system on the structure for the owner of the building?
Not normally. If there is no lightning protection system and you are not introducing any lightning currents / partial currents into the building, then you set up an antenna earthing system in accordance with your local requirements. These are often based on the IEC EN 60728-11 standards. This complies with current regulations and ABB leaflet no. 16 (https://www.vde.com/en/lightning-protection) which has been declared as binding. Important: The implementation guidelines of the grid operator must be followed.
The HVI Conductor is on the C-rail right next to the power supply cable. Is this permitted?
The HVI Conductor must only be fixed with the material designated for this purpose! If this is the case, cable routing right next to the power cable is permitted. However, you must bear in mind that an electromagnetic field will still arise, which inductively couples currents into the power cable and can cause a large voltage drop. For this reason, the power cable must be fitted with surge protective devices at the start and end (e.g. DEHN DSE M2P 60 FM [for -48 V] and DEHN DVA CSP 3P 100 FM [for mains voltage]).
We have antenna earthing in the existing system in line with DIN VDE 0855-300. Now we want to retrofit a new technical installation. Do I need to build an isolated lightning protection system for the new equipment?
The lightning protection system on the roof is from 1999, but still in good order and functional. Do I now need to upgrade it to the state of the art, because we have replaced an antenna?
We have built an additional antenna on the mast in the protected volume of the existing system. Have I compromised the grandfather rights as a result?
No. Grandfathering remains in place.
We need to route the new supply line through the building (chimney). What do I need to pay attention to regarding the design and the separation distance?
You must ensure the entire length of the conductor routed through the building maintains the separation distance, or more specifically "the prevention of flashovers". Since you are usually unable to maintain this, you should check if routing outside is possible instead. Otherwise, you must set up a separated (isolated) lightning protection system.
During the modification, the antenna support was extended by 1 metre. The HVI Conductor is now too short. Can I simply reconnect it, or extend it?
NO! None of the conductor types from the HVI product range that are currently available on the market may be extended. A new conductor might have to be routed here. You can, however, check if it is possible to "shift" the entire sealing end range using 8‑mm aluminium round wire in order to gain the "missing metres".
Can I do without wiring up surge protective devices when using the HVI Conductor?
No. The HVI Conductor can only ensure that the high voltage of the conductor is isolated and no flashovers occur when used correctly. The physical law dictating that any conductor through which current is flowing generates a magnetic field, thus inductively influencing its surroundings, also applies here. This is why adjacent conductor systems must be protected against surges.
